In this film, we explore children’s everyday participation in school, including the opportunities that children have to participate beyond just having their views sought on specific occasions. We make the claim that their participation is always political, and that it needs to be taken seriously. Please click here to view the film.
We expand on these issues further in the following chapter: Kirby, P. and Webb, R. (2020) Taking part, joining in and being heard? Ethnographic explorations of children’s participation in three UK primary schools, in J. Todres and S. King (eds.) The Oxford Handbook of Children Rights Law, Oxford: Open University Press. https://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190097608.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780190097608 This film was made during a visit to the OIVA project, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The aim of ‘OIVA’ is to enhance the skills of education professionals and students with regard to the promotion of the equality of children and parents within multi-professional settings of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). The film was funded by the Finnish Department of Education. We are grateful to OIVA for granting us permission to use the film.
